Overview
Backdoor Coffee is named after the infamous surf break located on the North Shore of Oahu. Cut by a split peak reef, dropping in left or right determines whether you are surfing Pipeline and Backdoor. During peak season, waves can reach up to a 20-foot face. It is considered one of the best right waves in the world.
Designer Statement
Making a logotype for backdoor coffee meant learning and acknowledging the surf break its name was created from. Extracting what makes Backdoor such an unusual surf spot and incorporating those elements into the logo was pivotal.
Tide charts, topographic maps, and wind diagrams were all referenced when coming up with the elements that would connect to the logo. Backdoor is a right-breaking wave, which is honored in the “D” of the logo. Choosing a typeface that carried the weight and bulk a forming wave creates was also put into consideration.

Kamaʻaina
A Kamaʻaina rate (also known as a Kamaʻaina discount) is something anyone who grew up or has lived on the islands can tell you about. Kamaʻaina roughly translates to “child of the land”. Many local and family-owned businesses in Hawai’i offer these discounts to those who live on the islands.
Locally Sourced
Backdoor coffee is locally sourced and grown on the big island of Hawai’i and roasted at the company’s main warehouse in Waikiki. Keeping its production local and 100% organic are based off the company’s values. Backdoor has locations in North shore and Waikiki.
