Overview
San Diego State Stormwater Task Force is a subdivision under the university’s environmental health and safety department. The subdivision was looking for a logo that showed its relation to the university's identity along with a mix of its own visual identity due to its unique role on campus.
The task force did not have any previous logos but gave visual examples of other logos they enjoyed and key points they wanted to be included in theirs. A flexible logo that could be widely applied to various surfaces such as textiles, printed collateral, and company vans were very essential.
Designer Statement
Using the initial meeting as a starting point, creating a straightforward mono-weight wordmark for this SDSU subdivision was the correct design solution. The building extending from the first diagonal vertex of the “w” is the iconic Hepner Hall building located on campus. Just under Hepner hall is also where the subdivisions work offices are located on campus. The logo is simple and straightforward, yet still defines its association with San Diego State University.
The Stormwater Task Force at San Diego State makes a large effort to raise its awareness to the student body by having booths at university events. Having a logo and identity system that could be applied on various “swag” items given away to students at vendor booths was very important.
The fish icons served as a friendly but informative way to remind and evoke awareness to the SDSU student body where rain water eventually ends up. These fish are a reminder that stormwater eventually reaches San Diego sea life though streams, rivers, and sewage systems, finally making its way to the ocean.
